IVPN head office is located in Malta. They currently provide VPN connections using 15 servers spread across 10 countries worldwide (USA, Canada, Iceland, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Romania, France, Switzerland and Hong Kong). Unfortunately, the information on the number of IP addresses that they provide is not stated in their website, but based on some information gathered by our site, it is believed to be near the 600 range (more or less).

The objective of the founding group was to create a VPN service that will set the standards for all VPN connection in the market. They also believe that gaining the trust of their customers by protecting their privacy is the most important aspect that a VPN company should have.

As anonymous VPNs go, iVPN doesn’t have a wide selection of servers. What they do have is a small stable of servers picked for speed and anonymity, namely:

  • USA – 4 servers
  • two servers each in the UK and the Netherlands
  • and one server in each of Canada, Switzerland, and France

The server status (https://www.ivpn.net/server-status) page gives a continuous update on all servers, including the current load (makes it easy to switch if you find your connection getting bogged down from too much traffic). Be aware that US servers and multihop VPN terminating in the US is blocked from P2P.

iVPN is a VPN service provider that was established in 2009 by a band of information security professionals who met at University of London while taking their master’s degree in Information Security.

How IVPN works

Using IVPN is comparable to utilizing a private network that is made up of two or more devices that are linked together on the internet using an encryption protocol to safeguard data and information that are being received and transmitted.

This kind of system makes certain that no third party individual or group can meddle with the data and information being transmitted between the devices connected to the private network, due to protection and encryption done by IVPN on the user’s browsing activities (Skype, email, downloads, etc.). In addition, by using IVPN, your ISP’s will not be able to restraint, view or log your internet activity.

Furthermore, when you connect to IVPN, your location and traffic cannot be determined by 3rd party entities and will appear to be originating from one of IVPN’s server, because your IP address will be hidden and one of IVPN’s dynamic IP addresses will replace it, so that websites and other individuals will only see IVPN’s IP addresses instead of yours.

Features of IVPN

Multihop Server Connection

Unlike other VPN service providers, IVPN allows user to connect to two or more VPN servers to route their traffic, giving users a higher degree of privacy and anonymity. Multihop is achieved by integrating this technology to OpenVPN’s 256- bit encryption. Consequently, using this feature will slow down your connection speed due to the added hops needed to transmit and receive data.

Supports multiple protocols and devices

IVPN offers L2TP/ IPSec (256-bit encryption) and OpenVPN (256-bit encryption). They support devices that run on Windows, Linux, MacOSX and Android. Unfortunately, they do not support PPTP and SSTP protocols.

Filesharing capable

IVPN allows P2P activities on its network. However, USA servers block these requests (including Multihop requests), due to regulations imposed by their USA upstream providers.

No logging of Internet activities

IVPN does not log any personal information and internet browsing activities of its users. But, they do keep a record of the email and IP address that you used when you signed up for the account.

Unlimited bandwidth usage

IVPN does not limit any of the user’s bandwidth usage, so that you can enjoy unlimited access to the internet using your VPN connection.

Unlimited server switches and reconnects

IVPN allows all customers to connect to their VPN gateway servers and use as many servers as they want and as often as they need it.

7 days money back guarantee

New IVPN customers are allowed to request for a refund on their subscription fees within 7 days upon activation of their account for whatever reasons they have.

Customer Support

IVPN customer support can be reached through email and live ticketing system. They also provide a comprehensive FAQ’s and a knowledgebase section where you can get answers to common questions and troubleshooting instructions. Unfortunately, they do not have live chat support and information on their telephone number on their website.

Accepts Bitcoin payment

IVPN accepts Bitcoin payment for your subscriptions. Bitcoin payments allow users to maintain their privacy and anonymity.

Benefits of IVPN

IVPN restores your privacy

IVPN encrypts your traffic and guards your data against government agencies and other individuals who wants to spy on your personal information.

IVPN enhances your anonymity

All your browsing activity records are identified through your IP address. Thus, by using IVPN, your records will be kept anonymous, because the only thing that they can see is IVPN’s dynamic IP addresses.
No Usage or Speed Limit

IVPN provides you with unlimited access to fast premium VPN service that has no restrictions to protect your privacy and online identity.

  • Download Speed: 13.5 Mbps

Upon visiting their website, the clean, professional and extremely comprehensive information are impressive. Upon reading through it, the reader will be thoroughly educated on all matters privacy.

There are some concerns. The Privacy Policy, for example: one section is word for word identical to hide.me’s ( https://hide.me/en/legal#privacy ) (they’ve just changed “Malaysia” to “Malta”). It is also highly contradictory since, on the one hand, they claim “anonymous” and “no logging” but on the other hand, they collect all kinds of information for use by Google Analytics. Why they need Google Analytics, a service geared to marketers, not webmasters, is a mystery.

The interface of IVPN

The Connect Interface: Put in your login and password. If you don’t remember your password, click on the link in the middle.

Choose the server location and a protocol. You might try different protocols if one doesn’t work.

Finally click on the connect button to run the vpn.

The Settings interface: Choose special opportunities like “start at login” for a quick use, “minimize to tray” and “start minimized”. This is practical if you need the space on your desktop for other applications. If you don’t want to waste time just let the client auto connect to the last server on startup.

For the advanced options just read the information at “click here”. So you can check out if those settings are important for your purposes.

The diagnostic interface: In case of connection problems you can use logs. Just submit them and look at them by clicking on those buttons. By the logs you can get network information for submission to IVPN for further analysis and help.

They claim they keep no information that can link a user but they log identifying information about specific devices. Also peculiar is that the number of users per IP is limited to 3 to 5 when a VPN typically has dozens, even hundreds. The claim is that it’s used to avoid speed drops however such a low number of users would make tracking a particular individual not very difficult for anyone with any degree of skill. There is a lot of bumph about how they absolutely do not interfere with internet usage, yet they actively discourage filesharing and if users must, they can’t use American servers.

Customer service is another downfall: the only option is email to which they will respond “within 24 hours”.

All in all, this would not be a first choice but it could have merit.

IVPN Mode of Payments

  • PayPal
  • Bitcoin
  • Cash

IVPN Review Conclusion

IVPN is a little bit more expensive than other VPN service providers in the market today and they do provide a limited number of server options to choose from. On the other hand, they do provide a reliable and fast VPN connection that you can rely on.

Overall, we recommend IVPN for those VPN users that want extra security and privacy. IVPN’s multihop feature provides this added security to users, because it is more difficult to detect your real location when using multiple servers to cover your tracks.

This service isn’t that great. The encryption wasn’t good enough. I had to change vpn provider. When I changed to perfect privacy with the strongest encryption I had no problems. Someone was breaking the encryption.
